Surge in Applications for Public Housing

Cities are being overwhelmed with applications for public housing. This is to be expected with our current economy, but it is starting to get ridiculous. In Atlanta, there were 30,000 people lined up for 455 housing vouchers. When Chicago opened its public housing list for the first time in a decade, almost 215,000 people applied in a 4 week period. The federal government provides 2 million housing vouchers per year, and on average there are 4 applicants for every 1 voucher.
