Selling a Home that Has Pets

December 18, 2010

6 out of 10 households in the US have a pet, and having a pet can make it tough to sell a home, especially if your pet has been prone to “accidents”.  You are probably used to the smell of your house and it smells normal to you, however, to buyers, a pet smell is probably the #1 turnoff and can be a total deal-breaker.  I can’t tell you how many times I have walked into a house, the buyer sniffed it, and we walked right back out.  Sellers NEED to get rid of any pet smell.  This can be accomplished through professional carpet cleaning and whole house cleaning.  Really deep stains sometimes require carpet replacement, and sometimes it is so bad that the subfloor has to be shellacked.  It is a good idea to hide pet-related stuff, and be sure your pet (dogs especially) are not in the house for showings.
